Career Center of the university under new management: Iwana Hübner in interview

Since the beginning of May 2020, the Career Center at HWG LU has been under new management: Iwana Hübner, born in 1987,  now supports students and graduates in all matters relating to job applications and career entry. The 33-year-old brings a Master's degree in Business Psychology & Change Management, work in management development at BASF SE, training as a systemic consultant and several years of experience as a job coach and measures coordinator at various educational institutions to her new position. In the following interview, Iwana Hübner introduces herself to the university public:

Ms Hübner, you have been Head of the university-affiliated Career Center at HWG LU since May 2020. Have you had a good start despite the coronavirus-related restrictions?
I. Hübner: Yes, thank you very much, I had a very good start, even if it was a little unusual. On my first day, three of us met at the university in compliance with social distancing rules and, after a few technical teething problems, we continued our training via Zoom. But that worked very well.

What tasks does your new position involve?
I support students and graduates of the university in starting their careers, e.g. in the form of application checks, career coaching, preparing for job interviews or finding a suitable mentor. I also plan workshops on popular topics such as salary negotiations or applying in English. I also maintain the Career Portal, where new job advertisements are posted daily and companies and students come together.

What appeals to you most about the new position?
What appeals to me is that, on the one hand, I am in direct contact with the students and can support them and, on the other hand, I can further develop the Career Center's portfolio in line with their needs.

What are the first goals you have set yourself?
One major goal is to make the Career Center even more present, especially among students at the university's other locations. I would also like to breathe more life back into the mentoring program, as I consider this opportunity to be very valuable and would have liked something like this myself when I was a student.

What did you do professionally before you took office in Ludwigshafen?
Before taking office, I worked as a job coach for several years and helped people with multiple barriers to employment to improve their chances of being integrated into the job market. Most recently, I coordinated a refugee program with the aim of improving the participants' language skills and placing them in employment subject to social insurance contributions.

Why did you choose HWG LU?
Having worked with socially disadvantaged people for many years, access to education, equal opportunities, mutual respect and appreciation are extremely important to me. That's why I completely identify with the university's mission statement and really wanted to become part of this great institution.

Thank you very much for the interview!
