German-French meeting at the wine campus Neustadt

After long months of the coronavirus pandemic and the associated restrictions, the students of the Franco-German Master's in Viticulture and Oenology, which is offered in cooperation with the Université de Haute-Alsace in Colmar, are finally able to come together and enjoy two weeks of attendance together. Visiting the region and discovering the Palatinate culture will not be missed. An online information event for prospective students will take place on June 23.

The attendance weeks should have taken place around the Franco-German Day on January 22, but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Unfortunately, it was also not possible for French students to study in Neustadt this summer semester and they were replaced by online education. "We are delighted to finally be able to welcome the students of the first year of the Franco-German Master's degree at the Neustadt Wine Campus. Such binational degree programs thrive on encounters and intercultural exchange, so it was important for us to organize these attendance weeks before the end of the semester. Fortunately, the latest coronavirus restrictions allowed us to do so," explains course director Prof. Dr. Maren Scharfenberger-Schmeer.

In addition to lectures, laboratories and exercises in the subjects "Innovations in Oenology", "Innovations in the Chemistry and Microbiology of Wine", "Special Sensory / Consumer Research" and "Smart & sustainable viticulture", a supporting program is offered to encourage students to get to know each other and discover the Palatinate culture. The program includes a guided tour of the historic Schlossgasse in Hambach an der Weinstraße. On June 14, the students will be invited by the Franco-German Society of Neustadt to a guided tour of Neustadt's old town. After the tour, the group will be welcomed by Mayor Stefan Ulrich at Neustadt Town Hall. Culture also plays a major role in the curriculum: as part of the course "History and Culture of Wine on the Upper Rhine", the students will visit the Villa Rustica in Ungstein, Speyer Cathedral, the Peasants' War House in Nußdorf and Hambach Castle on June 15 to discuss the relationship between man and vine since their cultivation in the Neolithic Age and to study Palatinate history.

Funded by the Franco-German Civic Fund
The attendance weeks and the cultural program from 7-18 June are funded by the Franco-German Civic Fund. The Franco-German Civic Fund was established on January 22, 2019 by the German and French governments with the Treaty of Aachen. It "supports citizens' initiatives and associations, city and regional partnerships, foundations or actors from the social economy, education and science in the service of Franco-German friendship and a vibrant Europe."

Cross-border Master's degree course: applications still possible until 15.07
Anyone interested in the Master's in Viticulture and Oenology can apply for the winter semester 2021/2022 until 15.07.2021. The Franco-German Master's degree course in Viticulture and Oenology was launched in September 2020 as a cross-border course. The aim is to train the future generation of European wine experts for the wine industry, wine research and the tasks of professional education and administration. The course is divided into four semesters and three practical phases, which are completed in wineries, and concludes with a double degree (German and French Master of Science in Viticulture & Oenology). Two internships and one semester of study take place in France. Thanks to an intensive language course in the first semester, prospective students with little knowledge of French or German are able to start their studies. Language acquisition and Franco-German exchange are promoted throughout the course through joint tandem courses, excursions and meetings.

The Master's degree program in Viticulture and Oenology is aimed at national and international Bachelor's graduates  in viticulture and oenology as well as in agricultural, natural and engineering sciences. For the stay in France, each student receives a grant from the Franco-German University in the amount of €300/month. No tuition fees are charged.
